The Fight for Prescott’s Future

Close to 200 hundred well-wishers crowded the Arizona Room of the Hassayampa Inn last night to help kick off Prescott City  Councilman Phil Goode’s bid to become the next Mayor of Prescott. Those in attendance included some of Prescott’s top political figures and civic activists. Both the current and former Chairs of the Yavapai County GOP, Lois Furwirth and Donna Tanzi were there to lend support.

Former Prescott Mayor and current County Supervisor Harry Oberg lauded Phil Goode’s integrity and independence from outside influences.

State Representative Quang Nguyen spoke of Goode as a “servant leader” and a “Constitutional Conservative” and “champion of the Second Amendment.”

Former State Representative Noel Campbell spoke of Goode’s role in helping pass legislation regulating sober living homes.  Others speaking on Councilman Goode’s behalf included Noble Hathaway, former President to the Arizona State Rifle and Pistol Association, Walt Anderson, co-founder of Save the Dells, and former City Councilman Chris Kuknyo, who is serving as Goode’s campaign manager.

The theme that ran through all those speaking in support of Mr. Goode’s candidacy is Prescott’s rapid growth and the risk of overdevelopment that threatens Prescott’s limited water resources and is destroying the scenic beauty and small town flavor that makes Prescott such a desirable place to live. Candidate Goode has pledged to stop the current practice of selling water to developments outside the city limits, which is a key driver of what many believe to be out of control growth. He has also pledged not to accept any campaign contributions from developers, many of whom are demanding water  allocations and city funded infrastructure to support their developments.

Mr. Goode stated that this year’s election for Mayor and City Council is a referendum on the future of Prescott.  Wealthy developers are trying to buy City Hall. The effects of their unmanageable, out of control growth are irreversible. If Prescott  is to  preserve its small town flavor and protect its open spaces and scenic beauty, voters must elect leaders who are willing to stand up to the developers and act in the best interest of local citizens. We must fight for our future.
