Bears Find A Way To Beat Badgers In Overtime – PHS Sports Roundup

Varsity Boys Basketball

The Bradshaw Mountain Bears came from behind to win a 51-47 thriller in overtime, at Prescott High School, in front of some fans last night. A reduction in the restrictions by the AIA earlier in the day, made it possible for many to attend for the first time this year.

Prescott legend Cal Cordes said, “Oh boy, it was great to see people I hadn’t seen in quite awhile. Fun to see the kids play again.”

The Bears led on the first basket of the game, but Prescott would take a lead, that they would hold onto till Carter John pulled up and nailed a three pointer with :22 left in regulation to tie that game at 45. A couple of minutes before to that, with Prescott up 45-41 things began to unravel for the Badgers. Milap Owens took an inbounds pass and was pushed by a Bradshaw Mountain player, but was called for traveling.

Both teams had their chances to win in the final seconds, but the lid on the basket sent the game to overtime.

Bradshaw Mountain got their first lead since the start on an inside basket by Nate Summit. Milap Owens tied the game at 47 with 3:01 remaining for what turned out to be the final hoop of the game for the home team. Carter John’s basket made it 49-47. The Badgers were unable to score, and were forced to foul. The Bears missed a couple of front ends of one and ones, but Prescott could not get the ball in the basket.

Prescott coach Travis Stedman said, “Bradshaw did a nice job staying composed and closing out the game. We allowed a lot of adversity to affect us in the way we executed, which caused us not to close out the game. We did everything possible to win the game for the first 31 minutes. The problem is tonight’s game had 36  minutes.”

Nate Summit led the Bears with 16 points and 7 rebounds. Ben Wilder pulled down 9 rebounds, and Josue Luna had 7 rebounds.

The Badgers (7-4) in the Grand Canyon Region, and (9-5) overall, get right back on the court tonight to face St. Mary’s, the top team in Division 4. Game time is at 7:00pm. Bradshaw Mountain (10-0) in the GCR, and (13-2) overall, will host Coconino (9-1) and (13-1) tomorrow night at 7:00pm, in a battle for the Grand Canyon Region title.
