PHS Sports Roundup: Badgers Blow Out Mohave 72-41, Soccer Teams Remain Undefeated

The Badgers got a huge first half performance from  Jason Parent, that helped beat the Mohave Thunderbirds 72-41 in the Badger Dome.

Parent scored 18 points, 16 in the first half, with two of those baskets dunks, as the home team raced out to a quick lead.

Coach Travis Stedman, “We came out strong, but as they game continued, I thought we could have played better defense tonight. We will have to do better, but a wins a win.”

The Badgers jumped all over Mohave, up by 22 after only eight minutes. Leading 46-17 at the half gave coach  Stedman a lot of time to play his bench. “Anytime you can get the guys some additional playing time, its just going to make you a stronger team.”

Milap Owens, who scored 16, was the only starter to get some real second half playing time. Jacob Brown played well off the bench with 9 points, as did Scooter Schwartz with 8, while battling on the boards.

The fourth quarter running clock closed out the game quickly, as Mohave managed to outscore the Badgers 10-5 in the quarter.

Prescott (6-2) in the Grand Canyon Region and (7-2) overall. Mohave is now (0-8) and (0-11). The Badgers will host Mingus tonight at 7:00pm.

Varsity Girls Basketball

The Mohave Lady Thunderbirds beat the Prescott Lady Badgers 50-39 in Bullhead City last night.

Even though the Lady Badgers trailed throughout, they were in striking distance early in the final quarter.

Prescott struggled in the first half, trailing 20-10 at the break. Jamie Huttman played her best game of the season thus far that helped keep the Lady Badgers in the game.

The Lady Badgers trimmed the Mohave lead to 38-33 with just under six minutes to play on a three pointer by Jamie Huttmann.

After a Mohave timeout, the Lady Thunderbirds responded wioth a 7-0 run to put the game away. Alyssa Heath led all scorers with 27. Jamie Huttmann led the Lady Badgers with 14. Hollie Dalton added 12.

The Lady Badgers will host Lee Williams, on Friday 7:30pm.

Prescott remained unbeaten with a 3-1 win at Seton Catholic Prep in Mesa last night.

Frank Castro scored two goals and Also Munoz added a goal for the top team in Division 4.

The Badgers (7-0) will travel to play Poston Butte tonight at 5:00pm. Seton Catholic dropped to (2-6).

Varsity Girls Soccer

Kari Kasun scored three goals to help the Badgers beat the Poston Butte Broncos 7-0 on a cool windy Tuesday afternoon in Prescott.

The Badgers, the top team in Division 4, scored quickly to start the game when Kari Kasun picked up the assist on a goal by Nicole Raiss.  Ellie Magnett scored another Badger goal ten minutes later for a 2-0 lead. The score remained the same for the final 26 plus minutes left in the first half.

Prescott added five goals in the second half. Kasun got her first goal with Nicole Raiss on the assist for a 3-0 lead. Kasun added her second three minutes later and a 4-0 Badger lead.

Nicole Raiss picked up her second goal a couple minutes later for a 5-0 lead. Kasun added her third and final goal at the midway point for a 6-0 lead.

Kennedy Carr put the exclamation point on the game with a goal of her own and a 7-0 win.

Coach Paul Campuzano said, “I think the girls are starting to play as a group. We have eight new starters playing together and it takes time for them to get comfortable with one another.”

Prescott (8-0) will play at Shadow Mountain on Thursday at 4pm.

Wrestling

The Badgers fell to a strong Chino Valley squad 45-24 on Tuesday.

Lincoln Eby improved to 7-1 with an impressive first period pin. Landen Francis wrestled well against a returning state placer from Chino. Joseph Willoughby won by pinfall in decisive fashion. Jackson Perkins continued his unbeaten season with a pinfall win over the number 4 ranked wrestler in Division 3 at 145. Cody Hanna improved to 6-2 on the season with a victory by pin.

The Badgers will be at Bradshaw tomorrow with a 4:00 pm start time.
