Badgers Reverse Fortunes With A Pair Of Wins Over Mohave

Varsity Girls

It took a tad over three quarters for the Prescott Lady Badgers to come alive and play with intensity, which resulted in a comeback win over the Mohave Lady Thunderbirds 42-34 in the Badger Dome Friday night.

Prescott trailed 29-17 after three quarters, when Hollie Dalton found the basket and continued to fill it. Dalton finished with 19 points said,”My shot wasn’t falling early when I was driving and in the second half we were able pick up our energy, which resulted in rebounds and steals, which gave us more chances.”

Janie Rudy did her best to keep the Lady Badgers in the game, scoring half of her 14 points in the first half, and the rest in the final quarter said,”I think we started to work together and we saw we can do it. This is a big confidence boost. I am proud of us and this should help us as we go through the rest of the season.”

Things were not well early for Prescott as they struggled on the offensive end, while Mohave was building a lead with their size advantage. The Lady Thunderbirds led 19-7 after baskets by Jonni Johnson and Kylee Heath.

Dalton got her points with 1:44 left in the half on a drive that resulted in an old fashioned three point play. Alyssa Heath nailed a three pointer to close out the half and a 22-10 Lady Thunderbird lead.

The teams played an even third quarter, before the big run started on a Dalton bucket with 6:23 to play. The Lady Badgers turned up the heat and Mohave had no answer. Prescott took the lead for the first time with 3:03 left on a Rudy jumper, going up 32-31.

Lady Badger coach Bobbi Yoder said, “That was a pretty big win for us tonight. The girls definitely cleaned up some of our turnovers the plagued us the last game. We knew we would have to keep Alyssa Heath in check tonight to have a chance. The girls did a great job executing on her tonight, finally wore her down and got her off her game, holding her to 6 points in the second half. Our defense and a big night from Janie Rudy and Hollie Dalton offensively is what pulled that game out for us in the end. Great team effort by everyone. Now we know what we are capable of.”

Mohave drops to (1-1) and will host Flagstaff on Tuesday at 7 pm, while the Lady Badgers even their season at (1-1), and will pay a visit to Coconino at 5:30 pm also on Tuesday.
