Yavapai College District Governing Board Approves Amended College Re-Entry Plan; Fall Classes Start August 17

The Yavapai College District Governing Board unanimously approved an amended plan for the College’s return to classes and services for the fall semester.

The amendment was approved on Tuesday at a special Board meeting because of the liability coverage available to the College for COVID-19.

Yavapai College is a member of the Arizona School Retention Risk Trust, Inc. (the Trust), which provides Arizona public school districts and community colleges with property and liability coverage and related services. The Trust currently services 247 public school districts and community colleges in Arizona.

On Tuesday, the Trust announced that it would provide liability coverage for its members.

The amendment approved by the College Board results in some minor changes to the College’s five-phase re-entry plan. The College plans to open its semester in ‘phase orange,’ which includes the following changes:

  • The requirement of signed waivers for all students and visitors.
  • The transition of more classes to an online environment. Originally, YC planned for 70% of its classes to be online this fall. With the amended plan in place, that number will be closer to 85%.
    • Classes that will move online are sciences, studio arts, performing arts, and physical education classes.
    • Classes that lead to essential jobs that are in high-demand in Yavapai County will make up the other 15% of classes and will have some in-person components. Those classes are in the areas of Career and Technical Education and Allied Health. They include automotive, welding, CNC, nursing, fire science, and EMS, among others. The Northern Arizona Regional Training Academy (NARTA) for law enforcement will also continue to operate in person.
  • Student support services will now operate in a remote capacity during the orange phase.
  • All in-person events, including facility rentals, are cancelled.
  • All recreational facilities are closed to the public, including the pool, fitness centers, and the tennis courts.

These new adjustments to the College’s plan will further support its goal of helping to mitigate the spread of COVID-19.

“We’ve spent the summer preparing for the upcoming fall semester and we are confident that the College is ready for students to return. We are excited to see everyone, either virtually or in-person,” said Dr. Lisa Rhine, President of Yavapai College.

The College’s five-phase re-entry plan will go into effect on August 10, in phase orange. The College’s full re-entry plan is available at www.yc.edu/reentry.

Classes begin on August 17, and registration is still open. Visit www.yc.edu/register for more information.
