This was an event sanctioned by the 100% RAW Powerlifting Federation and organized by Paul Gillott, who has a pretty impressive weight lifting record of his own. Gillott is currently a volunteer wrestling and strength coach for the Prescott High School Wrestling team, working side by side with Coach Dan Payne. Powerlifting is a sport that is open to anyone - young and old, men and women. No matter what, whether it was the young teenagers or the men in their 70's, all were competing, not just for titles, but against themselves, trying to improve their own personal records. In the Master's category, Female division, Jane Goldstein broke the national record for bench press with 155 pounds, and also set a new curl record with 55 pounds. That's pretty impressive, especially since Goldstein is in her 60's. Mike Hawkins, who is only 57 years old, benched 240 lbs. yesterday. He explained that he had lifted weights all his life, but recently decided he needed to get back in shape. He took home a first place medal for his efforts - the first he had earned at a sanctioned event since 1971. If you didn't have an opportunity to participate in this event yesterday, have no worries. Gillott promises another opportunity in April. So, hit the gym and start getting ready now! The First Annual Northern Arizona Raw Powerlifting Competition was held yesterday at Prescott High School. Two events were offered, bench pressing and curl, with over 30 people participating; many making attempts to break national and world records.
