The Prescott Badgers climb on to the bus at 8 am on their way to the first round of the playoffs.

As the Prescott High School football team climbed on the bus this morning at 8 am, headed to Tucson, they knew they were headed to the toughest game of their season, the first round of playoffs. The Sabino Sabercats were undefeated this season, and had the home field advantage.

Before he got on the bus, Daniel Brutinel, #73, OL/DL, was asked if he thought Prescott would win. "Yeah," he grinned with confidence.

It is about a 4-hour drive to Tucson from Prescott, so Coach Lou Beneitone made arrangements for the team to go to Phoenix first, and practice in the middle of the day, continuing their journey later that afternoon. Bill Gahn, the former Prescott High School football coach, and the father of Assistant Coach Gabe Gahn found a field for the team to use in Phoenix.

The game in Sabino started just a couple of minutes after 7 pm, and it wasn't long before Sabino scored the first touchdown in the game, enjoying their homefield advantage. But, with 1:28 left in the first quarter, Jake Jarvis, #23, carried the ball over the goal line for the Prescott Badgers, bringing the score to 6-7. Brandon Howell's kick was good for the extra point, tying the game at 7.

Sabino and Prescott proved to be evenly matched, as each scored another touchdown in the second quarter. Jarvis carried the ball over the goal line for the Badgers, for his second touchdown of the game. As the teams left the field at halftime, the score was tied, 14-14.

The third quarter started with Sabino giving up a safety to Prescott, bringing the score to 16-14, giving Prescott the lead. Having played just under 3 minutes in the third quarter, Jarvis again carried the ball over the goal line, bringing the score to 22-14. This time, the Badgers did not get the extra point. Prescott would score once more in the third quarter, giving themselves a cushion, with the score of 28-14.

Daniel Brutinel was confident the Badgers would win tonight's game.
But, the Sabercats were not willing to give up yet. With tenacity and determination, they clawed their way back into the game, and by the middle of the fourth quarter, they had evened out the score once more, 28-28. Momentum seemed to be going Sabino's way, but the Badgers remained calm. Then Jarvis scored yet one more touchdown with 3:45 left in the game. The Badgers failed on their two point conversion try, leaving  the score at 34-28.

At that point, Sabino started their march down the field to try to win the game, or at least tie it. As the Sabercats moved closer to their goal line, the clock was ticking away. With 2:18 left in the fourth quarter, Sabino's quarterback attempted a long pass, but Jarvis, certainly the man of the hour for Prescott, intercepted the ball on the Prescott 46-yard line.

With the Badgers in control of the ball, Jarvis managed to rush for a first down. After that, it was simply a matter of protecting the ball, and not making any mistakes.

Final score, 34-28. Prescott wins, advancing to the next round of the playoffs!

Note: Jarvis ended the night with 4 touchdowns, one in each quarter, and a key interception on the night. Jarvis also rushed for 140 yards.
