From left to right: Charles James Hector, top, Matthew Jacob Bender, lower, Deputy Dean Guthery and Elliot.
Charles James Hector, 26, was driving the vehicle and told Deputy Guthery that he and his passenger, Matthew Jacob Bender, 19, hac been visiting family in Bakersfield and were now returning home to Prescott. Upon being questioned as to whether he had any illegal substances or weapons in the car, Hector admitted to having a handgun in the glove compartment, but denied having any drugs in the vehicle. Fortunately, "Elliot," who is Deputy Guthery's drug-trained K-9, was there to do a sniff search of Hector's vehicle. When Elliot alerted on the driver's side trunk seam, the vehicle was searched, producing a cereal box in the trunk with over 3/4 pound (12.4 ounces) of marijuana. In addition, there were three bongs with residue, a small plastic container with ten RX meds, a fixed blade knife, a .45 caliber semi-automatic handgun and 40 rounds of ammunition. Both Hector and Bender were arrested and charged with Possession of Mrijuana, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, and Possession of a Weapon During a Drug Offense. Hector was also charged with Possession of Prescription Medications. The Yavapai County Sheriff's Office has a total of four K-9 Deputies. Although it is very expensive to get a police-trained dog, most are donated or sponsored by donations. The Deputies must undergo occasional continuing education as part of the program.

Its funny how this article makes these two young men out to be complete criminals. They are not. In fact, Im sure both of those guys had more going for them than most of the people in this state and country. Trust me, they are not bad people and it pisses me off that police officers and judges are so qiuck to judge someone that they dont even know...

Bender is currently studying Aerospace Engineering at the moment with excellent grades. He is one of the smartest, most dedicated young men that i have ever met. The fact that he was arrested will not change his passion for designing aircraft and spacecraft, learning new and ever complicated aspects of the mathematical universe around us. Any genuine search for legitimate sources on the danger of marijuana will yield a plethora of imformation about the positive benefits of the drug. The myth that marijuana is a gateway drug is also unfounded and not based in scientific research but rather the speculation of legislative bodies long past. The ever increasing acceptance of soft drugs like marijuana in the culture will eventually push, and cause the reform of our national drug laws, and will prove that young people like Bender who are upstanding citizens, are not criminals and should not be punished for using what God has put on this Earth.

They are not criminals, they are had drugs in the car. It's not a crime, yet it's not legal. I also don't think that police would bring any improvements in this case, these kids need to serve some time in drug rehab just to get familiar with real drug effects.
