Tammy Linn steps down from the United Way as Executive Director, as she leaves the organization in excellent hands.
Tammy Linn's infectious smile, and strong work ethic have brought the United Way to a new level in Yavapai County. Tammy Linn has been a very public figure in the Prescott community since accepting the United Way of Yavapai County Executive Director position a little over two years ago.
During her years of service, she brought the services of United Way to the people in this community, whether it be by organizing packages for the troops, or firewood for the needy in the winter. She pulled together community leaders and businesses to offer help to those who need it most, and she did so with grace and humor and compassion.
Now Linn is stepping down from her position as Executive Director - but not away from the community. As she writes in a letter:
Hi Friend,
First, I want to thank you for your strong support and passion helping OUR United Way over the last two years of my tenure here! With the help of a strong board, excellent staff and community support, UW will continue to grow on the past two years of focus. We have money in the bank; had a fabulous audit with accounting and operating systems in place; built community respect; and tried to show that we (UW) can and will be a community builder to impact those in need.
But, with three boys and my passion for our community and character, I will be turning over the reign to a fabulous gentleman--Mike Whiting. His experience is vast, including working closely with United Ways in the Valley.
This has been a tough decision. But, in my mind, God put me in the "right place at the right time" to help the UW get back to doing what the community needs in a financially responsible way. Now, we have a person who can take it to the next level... I will remain an avid volunteer. AND, with a very ENGAGED BOARD and OUTSTANDING CAMPAIGN CABINET…. OUR United Way will truly reach milestones in 2008 and beyond.
In addition to the UW, I have been teaching at a small high school (Yavapai County High School) for the last 5 months and will continue to challenge and engage these (many at-risk) youth next year. What a JOY to be with students who have potential... and bring it out in them!
Also, I'll be consulting with the Arizona Dept. of Education. This will give me opportunities to bring more schools on board with developing character. Beyond that, I'm reflecting on what I can do for this community. And, be open to other opportunities that fit into my "work" and "mommy" schedule. My three boys (13, 8 and 6) are so proud of mommy and want me to be with them more often on field trips, etc. But, as #2 son said, "Mommy, we're proud of you for your good character."
Also, my volunteer time as the Chairman of Prescott's Capital Needs Committee has been just fabulous! True! You know me… I thrive on challenges... bringing people together... and helping them come to some sort of consensus on issues. I’m hoping to continue to be challenged in ways to help our community, our children and our character.
So, I will be leaving the UW on June 1 to take on new opportunities. BUT, I will still remain very connected to the community on many boards and activities. In addition, I have several volunteer community service projects after June 1 in which I will be helping the United Way. So, I’m really not going too far.

In addition to working for the United Way, Linn is the Chairman of the Prescott Capital Needs Committee; works with Character in Education and consults for the State Department of Education. In her spare time, when she's not spending time with her family, she attends Prescott City Council and Prescott Unified School District board meetings.
