Yavapai College Roughriders Volleyball to Face Eastern Arizona College In District B Championship on Friday

PRESCOTT- The Yavapai College Roughriders swept Seminole State College at home on Wednesday, November 1st, and advances to the District-B Championship game against Eastern Arizona.

“We were hoping we would be the first-round bye,” Roughrider sophomore outside hitter Jailynn Butler said. “But it kind of works out better that we are playing on Wednesday because we are better playing back-to-back games.”

After a 25-10 Roughrider victory in set one, Seminole State College put up a fight in set two and three but fell 25-22 and 25-19, respectively.

“It’s very tough to come that far and play a good first set, I thought they (Seminole State College) really rebounded and played well,” Roughrider Volleyball Head Coach Zachary Shaver said. “Because they struggled so much in the first set, I think our players backed off a little bit and took it for granted that they were going to continue to play that way."

“I was very happy with once we got to that point, we made an adjustment mentally and physically and didn’t let them continue to push,” Shaver said.

Butler led the Roughriders with eight kills, while Nynke de Vries added seven kills. Victoria McCarty was a key defensively recording 14 digs.

The victory on Wednesday night broke a three-game losing streak to end the season. A few issues from the losing streak showed up in the semi-final on Wednesday night, but the Roughriders were able to overcome.

“Consistency is the most important thing right now, that’s why we lost those last three matches,” Shaver said. “The places tonight where we struggled were our inconsistencies, our errors…we just have to keep lowering the errors a little bit so we are in better position to be more consistent from start to finish.”

After losing to Eastern Arizona in the first round of the playoffs last season, Yavapai College heads to Thatcher, Arizona looking for payback against Eastern Arizona College. The victor wins the District B Championship and moves on to the national tournament.

“As sophomores, we knew what the sting was when Eastern came down here and beat us first round (last season),” Butler said. “We’re hoping where we are is where we are meant to be and we’re just going to prove ourselves on Friday and hopefully going to nationals like we planned.”

The match begins at 7:00 pm.
