Two 50-Yard-Plus Touchdowns from Ryan Greene Sends Badgers to 22-12 Win Over Flagstaff Eagles

PRESCOTT- Bill Shepard Field has not been the friendly confines this season as the Badgers were winless on their home turf so far entering the game Friday night, October 20th, against the Flagstaff Eagles. After a shutdown performance on defense and two 50-yard-plus touchdowns by Ryan Greene, the Badgers picked up that elusive first home win 22-12.

“As much as I was pleased about the 5-0 road record, I was embarrassed that I couldn’t deliver the home crowd a victory,” Prescott Badgers Head Coach Michael Gilpin said. “This was a great night to give it to them.”

A Prescott High School 3-0 lead in the second quarter would get wiped away as quarterback Austin Clark was picked off in by Michael Becenti Jr. who ran it back for a touchdown. A missed extra point had the Badgers down by three.

It wouldn’t take long for the Badgers to respond, seventeen seconds to be exact, as Greene found a hole in the Eagles’ defense and unleashed an 80-yard touchdown run to put the Badgers in front by three following a missed extra point.

The Badgers would add seven additional points to their lead with less than a minute before halftime as Clark connected with junior Ean Porter for a 30-yard touchdown reception.

Flagstaff closed the gap with eleven minutes remaining in the game following a touchdown completion in the red-zone from quarterback Henry Tagle to Colton Bond. The Eagles failed to convert the two-point play but still had decreased the deficit to only four.

As he did earlier in the game, Greene used his legs to swing momentum back to the blue and gold side of the field following a 72-yard touchdown reception from Clark.

The celebration for the important touchdown was a bit mild, due to the fact there was a flag on the play. Once the flag was picked up, the crowd and sideline reacted to the monumental score.

“I put everything I could into running it, but when they called that flag, it felt like a sinking feeling in my heart,” Greene said. “When they picked it up, the whole team flipped out. They were so excited.”

“That moment when you realize you’re going to win…that moment when it just clicks in your heart that we win, it’s such a sweet moment,” said Gilpin. “Ryan (Greene) has provided us a lot of those moments.”

The defense who only allowed six points-discounting the interception touchdown return-continued to hold the Eagles’ rushing attack as they had all game and secured the victory.

“We knew it was going to be a battle, they (Flagstaff) can really pound the ball, and that’s been something that we’re vulnerable to this year,” Gilpin said. “We put in a lot of work this week to fix that. We changed schemes a little bit, we changed personnel a little bit. I think the results were very positive.”

The Prescott High School Badgers welcome in their rival Bradshaw Mountain Bears at Bill Shepard Field for a 7 pm kickoff with playoff implications on the line to end the regular season on Friday, October 27th.

“We know we got Bradshaw (Mountain) next week and we are going to take it to them,” Greene said. “Everybody has to come out and support us, it’s going to be awesome.”
