This could be called the one that got away. The Prescott Lady Badgers led in the final seconds of regulation, and then again with a minute to play, but fell to the Lee Williams Lady Volunteers 49-46 in overtime last night in the Badger Dome.
The game was slow starting for Prescott as they trailed Lee Williams 6-3 with 2:40 left in the first quarter. Mary Hald tied the game at six, with the first Lady Badger lead coming on a free throw by Theresa Gutierrez. Heidi Madsen increased the lead to 9-6. Lee Williams came back to tie the game 12-12. The game was close as each team exchanged leads, with the Lady Volunteers holding a slim 19-17 lead at the half.
Trailing 22-21, the Lady Badgers went on a 7-0 run to end the third quarter to lead 28-22.
Prescott built their largest lead of the night at 32-24 with 6:16 left to play.
After a Lee Williams timeout, the Lady Volunteers implemented the full court press, which changed the game. A run of 11-4 trimmed the Prescott lead to 36-35. Sadie Snay who led the comeback tied the game at 39 on one of her long range three pointers with :29 to play. Theresa Gutierrez responded with a bucket to give Prescott 1 41-39 lead with :19 left. Sadie Snay knocked down another shot to tie the game with :09 left. A final shot by Prescott clanked off the rim to send the game to overtime.
In overtime, the Lady Badgers went up by four 45-41 on baskets by Mary Hald and Molly Courtright. Lee Williams came back to tie the game at 46 on a bucket by Thomas with 1:22 to play. The final bucket came on another long jumper by Snay to give the Lady Volunteers the lead. Prescott missd their chances in the final seconds as the clock ran out.
Theresa Gutierrez led Prescott with 15 points, 4 steals and 4 rebounds. Molly Courtright scored 13 and had 5 rebounds. Mary Hald was a force on the inside with 11 points and 14 rebounds. Abby Chartier finished with 6 points, 9 rebounds, and 2 steals.
Lee Williams improves to (5-5) in the Grand Canyon Region, and (9-10) overall, while Prescott drops to (2-7) and (9-13). The Lady Badgers will travel to face rival Bradshaw Mountain, on Tuesday at 5:30p
