Lobos No Match For Badgers in 15-0 Win

Softball team dominates, while baseball team suffers setback at La Joya Community.

Varsity Softball

The Prescott Badgers ended the regular season with a 15-0 shutout win over the La Joya Community Lobos.

Prior to the game, three seniors, Jaklyn Braithwaite, Xenia Franco, and Carly Ross were recognized along with their families.

It did not take long for the Badgers to get down to business. In the top of the first, Carly Ross started in the circle, striking out two of the three batters she faced.

Ashlynn Uvila led off and was hit by a pitch. Caeden McKelvey walked. Delaney Marshall hit a ball to third scoring, Uvila and it was 1-0. Kendall Schwartz smacked a ball that went off the third base bag, resulting in a double, scoring McKelvey and Marshall, for a 3-0 lead. Carly Ross reached on the second third base error of the inning. With two outs, Jaklyn Braithwaite sliced a two run double down the right field line, scoring Schwartz and Ross. Xenia Franco walked and scored, along with Braithwaite, on a double by Ashlynn Uvila, to make it 7-0. Caeden McKelvey's single scored Uvila to finalize the big eight run inning.

Kendall Schwartz came into pitch the second, third and fourth innings, allowed no runs, and no hits, while striking out seven.

The Badgers started off their half of the second with Kendall Schwartz reaching on an error, then scoring on a Carly Ross double. Jaklyn Braithwaite made it two for two with an RBI single, scoring Ross, and a 10-0 Prescott lead.

The Badgers added one more in the third, on an RBI single by Delaney Marshall, scoring Caeden McKelvey, who had reached on an error.

Prescott ended their scoring with a four run fourth. Once again an error started off the inning. Evelyn Morales reached on an error by the third baseman. Jaklyn Braithwaite and Ashlynn Uvila both walked to lead the bases. A passed ball scored Morales. Caeden McKelvey picked up and RBI on a ball hit to right field, scoring Braithwaite, and Uvila. Chris Banuelos sacrifice fly scored McKelvey.

Fran Larson came in to pitch the final frame. La Joya managed toload the bases, but Larson got Destiny Garcia to ground out to first to end the game.

Prescott (21-9) will wait to see who their next opponent will be. La Joya Community ends the season at (8-19). The Badgers ranked #13, will host #20 St. Mary's (21-10), in the first round of the Division II State Playoffs, on Saturday, at 10:15am.

Varsity Baseball

The La Joya Community Lobos beat the Prescott Badgers 4-2 in Avondale, Wednesday afternoon. 

Trailing 1-0, the Badgers tied the game up on a homerun by Matt Mendibles, his fourth of the season.

Angelo Lomeli pitched a complete game for the Lobos. Lomeli went seven innings, allowing only two runs on four hits, striking out seven and giving up only one base on balls. 

Matt Mendibles started on the mound for Prescott, and was relieved by Kody Jones in the fourth.

La Joya Community improves to (11-10), while the Badgers drop to (19-7). Prescott dropped for #12 to #15 with the loss, but will still host a state playoff game on Saturday at 11:00am, when the McClintock Chargers (16-10), come to town.
