Under threatening skies and a game time temperature of 92 degrees, the Thunderbird Chiefs took to the ground to knock off the visiting Prescott Badgers 28-20, at Jack Storey Field in Phoenix.
The Badgers were able to move the ball a short time, with pass completions from Dawson Winslow to Derek Knotek, before turning the ball over on downs at the Thunderbird 28 yard line. Thunderbird was running the ball effectively again, but a fumble recovery by Wyatt Blair got the ball back for Prescott. The Badgers were moving the ball again into Chief territory, but a Winslow pass was picked off by Cameron Norton and returned to midfield, frustrating Prescott once again.
Thunderbird extended their lead to 14-0 on a 51 yard run off tackle by Dominique King. The next series, the Badgers were deep into Chiefs territory once again, but an interception by Martin Nivens returned 95 yards for what appeared to be anothe Thunderbird score. A block in the back penalty brought the ball back, saving the Badgers from being down three scores.
Prescott finally got on the board on a nice zig zag run by Christian Setter from 10 yards out to cut the deficit to 14-7. That is the way the half ended, but the Badgers had new life going into the locker room.
A light rain finally showed up, but was never an issue on the field.
Prescott received second half kickoff, but went a much disappointed three and out. Both teams were unable to score in the third quarter. Thunderbird tight end Marcus Boyd added to the score early in the fourth, on a 13 yard reception from quarterback Andy Wittenwyler to go up by two scores.
Down 21-7, the Badgers mounted another drive. Quarterback Ryan Greene, along with a runs by Setter and a good catch by Kyle Peach, were able to lead Prescott down the field. The Badgers were able to get to the Thunderbird 13 yard line, before the drive stalled.
Prescott got the ball once again, this time made the most of it. Greene took a two step drop and threw out to the flat to Derek Knotek, who calmly threw to a wide open David Pearce in the far corner of the end zone with 7:14 left to get the Badgers within 21-14.
The Chiefs took the kickoff and went 80 yards on seven plays, capped off by a run around the right end from 5 yards out by Yanni Dorsey. Thunderbird went up 28-14 with 5:05 left.
The Badgers went back to work when Greene hit Setter on a 40 yard pass play into Chief territory. Another pass completion to Knotek put the ball to the Thunderbird 28 yard line. Collin Mills ran down to the 15. The Badgers punched it on an 8 yard run by Setter. The extra point attempt failed leaving Prescott down 28-20, with 3:33 remaining.
After an unsportsmanlike penalty, the only ensuing onside kick by the Badgers at the chiefs 40, after an unsportsmanlike penalty on Thunderbird Gave the Chiefs the ball at their own 28 yard line. King who finished with 180 yards and two touchdowns were able to run the final three minutes on the clock.
Coach Cody Collett said, "We battled hard tonight and came very close to beating a good football team."
Quarterback Ryan Greene had a good night throwing the ball, attributing to 174 yards, while quarterback Dawson Winslow threw for 44 yards. Ironically, it was Derek Knotek who threw the only TD pass of the night for Prescott. Christian Setter rushed for 100 yards for the second week in a row. Knotek also had 99 yards receiving to go with his 17yard TD pass completion. Nate Hayter had 59 yards receiving.
In regards to the Badgers scoring late in the game to get back within one score, "We run a two minute offense the whole game, so we never really feel we are out of the game. We thought we could come back."
Thunderbird improves to (2-0), while the Badgers fall to (1-1). Prescott will host North Canyon on Homecoming night, next Friday at 7pm.
