Badgers Open Up Tourney with Win

Update, 12-27: Badgers lost to Scottsdale Notre Dame Prep 45-41. Prescott is (10-4). Notre Dame is (8-3).

Next game in the tournament is versus Tucson Rincon at 10:30am. The Rangers come in with a (6-7) record.


Prescott got off to a slow start in their first game of the Alvarez Tire Holiday Hoops Classic at Bradshaw Mountain High School. The Badgers offense was a no show for the first few minutes as they fell behind 6-0. Prescott got their first points 3 1/2 minutes into the game and ran off 9 straight to take a 9-6 lead. The Badgers outscored the Rockets 13 -3 in the final 3 plus minutes of the quarter to gain the lead that they had for the remainder of the game.

Cam Gilbert was able to get some good looks inside and responded with a team leading 5 points. Dante Cameron provided a spark coming off the bench with 4 points.

Moon Valley fought their way back into the game by launching an arsenol of 3 pointers, some of which went down. Tyler Van Nostrand led the charge and finished the 1st half with a game high 10 points. The Badger bench scored 12 of the 13 points in the second quarter led by Keyshawn Liggins with 7 and Jordan Simpson with 5.

The tempo picked up in the second half as the Badgers slowly pulled away. Jaran Hoover, who was held to 2 free throws in the first half came out and quickly hit a long range 3. He finished the quarter with 12 points and ended the game with 16.

Tommy McMahon also came alive with 7 points, including a gliding drive through the paint, that forced Moon Valley coach to qucikly call a timeout. The Badgers led by as many as 17. That came with the score 51-34 just before the end of the 3rd quarter. Gilbert battled on the boards and finished the game with 6 blocked shots.

Moon Valley (2-9), managed to stick around by cutting the Badgers lead to 8 on three different occasions. That was as close as they got as the Badgers won the game by 13. Prescott (10-3), will play one more game tonight as they battle Scottsdale Notre Dame at 9:05pm. Play resumes tomorrow as well as the Badgers play Tucson Rincon at 10:30am. After all the teams play their 3 games, the teams will be seeded and play one more tomorrow, then Friday and possibly Saturday. Those teams and times are TBA, (To be announced).
