The #10 ranked Roughrider softball team swept their fourth consecutive ACCAC doubleheader Tuesday afternoon against Mesa Community College, 10-3 and 5-1. YC improves to 37-4 on the season and their league leading 33-3 ACCAC mark. Mesa falls to 19-23 overall and 15-21 in conference play.
In the opener, the Roughriders jumped out to an early 4-run lead but Mesa cut the deficit to 1 run after scoring 3 runs in the top of the fourth. YC scored one run in the fifth inning and added five runs in the bottom of the sixth to secure the victory.
Amy Robinson earned her 16th victory of the year from the circle surrendering 2 earned runs while striking out 5 Thunderbird batters.
Offensively, Karissa Pena and Raelynn Rios each had three hits. Rios had 2 doubles and a home run. Mikayla Newham, Mahina Chong, Andrea Sotelo and Mercedes Rothwell each had 2 hits apiece.
In the second game, YC had to come from behind to earn the victory. Kiana Spencer was dominant from the slab allowing 1 hit and 0 earned runs while striking out 4.
Mahina Chong was 3 for 4 to lead the Roughrider hitters. Jaydee Boursaw added to her NJCAA leading home run total with a two-run homer. Shayna Ige was 2 for 2.
Today’s victories set up a Saturday afternoon showdown with the 2nd place and #16 ranked Central Arizona College. The Roughriders swept a doubleheader from the Vaqueros in February, 8-0 and 16-11. Saturday’s doubleheader will begin at 1:00 PM at Bill Vallely Field in Prescott.
For the third time this season, Jaydee Boursaw was named the ACCAC Division I Player of the Week. She becomes the 2nd consecutive Roughrider to win the award. Andrea Sotelo was so honored last weeIn the latest NJCAA poll, YC remains at #10. Saturday’s opponent, Central Arizona College is ranked #16.
