Prescott High School Achieves Nearly Forty Graduates with Distinction in 2017 Class

PRESCOTT- The tassels were flipped and the caps were thrown on Friday night during Prescott High School’s class of 2017 graduation, as the reality of the accomplishment sunk in for Suncea Baker.

“The moment is indescribable,” Baker said. “Just to know I accomplished everything I set my goals for, and I walked across that stage with a diploma, I made my family proud.”

Thinking back to freshman year, Baker's senior friend helped start her high school career out on the right foot.

“She made it the most special freshman year I could ever ask for because she opened me up to so many new people,” Baker said.

The story was different for her softball teammate Ashlynn Uvila who mentioned a sense of fright during her graduate with distinction speech upon moving to a new state at the start of her freshman year.

“I was honestly so scared because I didn’t know anyone,” Uvila said after the ceremony.

The feeling soon went away for Uvila who, like Baker, joined various sports teams at the school.

“I was so fortunate to make the great friends I made through volleyball and then eventually softball,” Uvila recalled. “I’m so thankful that I moved here, It has opened the doors to so many new things I never could’ve had without moving here.”

As both walked across the stage and were handed their diplomas, they join a class of over three-hundred other students including nearly forty graduates with distinction.

“There is a lot of really great kids in the class of 2017,” Prescott High School beginning and intermediate art teacher Amanda Chartier said. “I think about everything that they’ve done, not only this year or this month, they’re a strong group of kids academically.”

Uvila will be attending the University of North Dakota while Baker will attend Yavapai College for physical training.
