An interesting twist to start this year’s Division 4 state playoffs, matching up rivals Prescott and Bradshaw Mountain. The Bears who beat Flagstaff twice in the regular season, winning the Grand Canyon Region undefeated at (12-0), still saw themselves in a state playoff play-in game. Meanwhile, Flagstaff (10-2) in the GCR, and (14-3) overall, received a first round bye. Nevertheless, the Bears beat the Badgers for the third time this season 3-0, in Prescott Valley last night.

Prescott fell behind 3-0 in the start, but came back to get their only lead of the first set after an ace by Ella Bleu Edwards gave the Badgers a 4-3 lead, the Bears took control again building an 20-10 lead. After a Badgers timeout, Prescott outscored Bradshaw Mountain 5-2 to pull, within 22-15, but the Bears won game one by nine.

Game two saw a kill by Kari Kasun give the Badgers a 4-3 lead, eventually increasing the lead to 6-3, before Bradshaw Mountain rolled off 11 in a row to lead 14-6. Prescott called a time out to try and regroup. The Bears continued to outscore the Badgers, increasing their lead to 21-7, on a 18-1 run. Prescott finished the game falling by 13.

The Badgers opened up the final game with the first point, but the Bears scored the next five to lead 5-1, going on to win by double digits again.

Bradshaw Mountain (14-4) will move on to the state playoffs, while the Badgers end their season at (8-10).

The Badgers (3-0) in the GCR, (6-2) overall, moved up one spot in this week’s AIA Division 4 poll to number six. Bradshaw Mountain (3-1), and (4-3), jumped up six spots to 17, after upsetting Coconino 14-0. The two teams play in the annual rivalry game at Prescott High School on Friday, and the stakes could not be any higher, with the winner taking the top spot in the Grand Canyon Region, and a guaranteed playoff spot. The top 16 teams in the final rankings will make the playoffs.
