The seniors opened up a 7-0 lead in the first two minutes, on baskets by Ryan Smith, a three pointer by Levi Van Dyke, and a paint job by Pippy Brown.  Coronado had a 6-0 run to pull within 7-6. Uriah Tenette came in and drilled a three pointer to boost the lead to 10-6. Jake Hilton won the challenge with the Dons big man Brandon Walker for a 12-6 lead. Micah Buettner went inside to close out the quarter with a 24-11 Badger advantage. Buettner said, “The whole night hasn’t really sunk in yet, but this was a fun   game to be in. Everyone got to contribute. We have such a great bunch on this team and I am really glad I have been able to be a part of it.” In regard to the playoffs, Buettner added, “We are looking forward to see what we can do in the open division.”

Zane Gaul, who saw limited action with six points and four rebounds, created problems for the Dons inside, as they attempted to work the ball around for open shots. The aggressive defense held Coronado to just 14 points in the final three quarters. Uriah Tenette played barely two quarters, but still led Prescott in scoring with 19 points, said, “It was unusual to sit for the start, but all these guys work so hard and they deserve the chance to get out there and play. I just came and ready to go.”

Normally senior Jake Hilton is one of the five starters, but last night he sat at the beginning. Hilton came in to score 13 points in limited minutes said, “This was something special for the seniors. There are seven of us, and we all want to play. The guys did a great job and got after it tonight. Great guys, like Ryan Smith had a special night out there.” On thoughts of the playoffs, Hilton added, “After enjoying tonight we will have to get back to work. We will be in the open division and we will go out there and try to win it.”

Senior Rome Bassett, had one of the nine three pointers on the night, led three categories with nine rebounds, five assists, and four steals. Senior Ben Duston had a double nickel, with five points and five rebounds.

The final basket brought pure jubilation from the student section when Smith, who opened up the game with a basket, closed it out with a three pointer. Smith, who was surrounded by his friends after the game said, “I was just excited. Being senior night and all, it was really exciting to hit that last shot.  It was a lot of fun out there, and I haven’t experienced that too much, so it was great.”

Van Dyke added,” Such a great feeling, especially at Prescott High School, for both football and basketball, that not to many get to experience.  The culture here, the student section, it was great.”

The Badgers (20-2), close out their best regular season since Prescott finished (23-3) in the 1970-71 season. Their co-region championship is their first since the 1995-96 season.

The AIA will release the brackets tomorrow for the open division tournament starting next Wednesday. The open division consists of teams in 4A, 5A, and 6A divisions. If the Badgers, ranked #24 in the open division win in each game the first two rounds, they will finish their season in the open division. If they lose either one of the first two round games, they will go into the 4A division playoffs,

The divisional playoffs will start the following week. The Badgers sit at #5 in 4A, and would be guaranteed a home game, and have a second shot at a championship.
