Three hundred pounds of dog and cat food were collected by Skyview students.

northpoint_neworleansWhile most students were savoring their last two days of Christmas vacation, the senior class from Northpoint Expeditionary Learning Academy climbed into vehicles headed to New Orleans for a two week learning adventure. Teacher Sidney Shepherd explains:

Not only did each student design their own senior project, the students also worked together to choose their activities. Shepherd explained that the students wanted to attend a full gospel church service while they are in New Orleans, and they will also be attending Friday prayers at a Mosque as part of their cultural studies in the area. In addition, they will be performing community service projects.

Credit for their curriculum projects will be awarded by Ms. Shepherd and Ms. Davis, based on input from Matt Hart and other specialists. Completion of all designed projects, participation in Expo night and participation in the Senior Intensive Night will be required for full credit, which will be awarded in the 2nd semester.

One question that probably comes to mind, considering the current economic climate, is, "How much does this cost?" Students at Northpoint have learned not to expect luxurious accommodations on their field trips, and the jaunt to New Orleans is no exception. These students will be sleeping in bedrolls on the floor, eating peanut butter sandwiches and fresh fruit and spending three days in travel each way - as opposed to flying, which simply didn't meet the budget constraints.

The cost for each student is projected to be $450 for the entire two weeks, including transportation. The students worked hard to raise money and donations collectively, covering about $250 each. They individually paid $200 apiece. There was no cost to Prescott Unified School District for the trip.

With the exception of the two foreign exchange students, all but one of the students have been at Northpoint for the entire four years - their closeness and camaraderie are evident as they load the vehicles with luggage (they've gone on so many trips together, they recognize each others' duffle bags) and 'circle up' before driving away. They squeeze in to place their hands in the middle of the circle and then give a big cheer before making one last bathroom run and heading out. Despite the prospect of three days driving, they're jaunty and enthusiastic - excited to explore New Orleans as they learn, serve and represent the community of Prescott.

Noe, who relocated to Prescott, Arizona, became acquainted with many Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University students through a common interest in aviation.

Noe started looking for ways to help these up-and-coming leaders in the aviation industry. Noe’s search led him to take advantage of the Pension Protection Act Of 2006 and the Post-9/11 G.I. Bill’s Yellow Ribbon Program.

“I have always been a proud patriotic American, having served in the Army paratroopers with the 82nd Airborne Division,” said Noe. “I am an enthusiastic supporter of all veteran programs.”

Noe directed his gift to support returning servicemen and women seeking a degree at Embry-Riddle’s Prescott campus, as well as senior-level students who need financial help to continue at the university.
