Northpoint, One of 8 in Nation with 100% College Acceptance Rate

25 September 2013

100% of last year's graduates are attending four year colleges.

When Northpoint Expeditionary Learning Academy first opened it's doors, it was with the firm intention that preparing students for college was the primary focus. Now, several graduating classes later, it's obvious that they have reached the very high standards they set for themselves.

This week, the Expeditionary Learning organization announced that Northpoint was one of only eight schools across the country that had 100% of their 2012 graduates accepted into, and attending, four year colleges.

Northpoint Director Geneva Saint Amour explains that this accomplishment is no accident. "Northpoint Expeditionary Learning Academy staff works with all students beginning in grade 9 to maintain the expectation of college acceptance.  In addition to 100% acceptance, our students have earned millions of dollars of scholarship money.  It is exciting to be in our 8th year of this expectation, and learn about the successes our graduates are experiencing in college and career placements."

In addition to their academic accomplishments, most students will travel to at least one other country during their four years at Northpoint, learning about new cultures and societies through on-site eduational opportunities and service projects. Various international travel opportunities are offered once or twice per school year.

Expeditionary Learning Announces Schools with 100% College Acceptance Rate for 2013-14 School Year

Expeditionary Learning, the national education non-profit network of more than 160 schools and 4000 teachers committed to deeper learning, announced today that 100% of graduates in eight of its schools nationwide, were accepted to four year colleges and are beginning their higher education journey for the current 2013-14 academic year.  The schools are:

    • Brooklyn School for Collaborative Studies, Brooklyn, NY;
    • Codman Academy in Boston, MA;
    • Mapleton Expeditionary School for the Arts in Thornton, CO;
    • Expeditionary Learning School for Community Leaders in Brooklyn, NY;
    • Northpoint Expeditionary Learning Academy, Prescott, AZ;
    • Springfield Renaissance School, Springfield, MA;
    • Tapestry Charter School, Buffalo, NY; and
    • Washington Heights Expeditionary Learning School, New York, NY

“These eight schools are exemplary models of what high schools can achieve through a whole school design that focuses on rigorous academic learning, combined with citizenship and character,” said Scott Hartl, President and CEO of Expeditionary Learning. “Academic achievement, together with the skills needed to succeed in and beyond college -– problem solving, persistence toward excellence, and active citizenship  - prepare Expeditionary Learning students for the real world with a focus on making contributions to their communities.”

Dr. Stephen Mahoney, Founder and Principal of Springfield Renaissance School, in Springfield, MA, said the founding class graduating in 2013 achieved a significant milestone. “Seven years ago, we set out to build a school that would beat the odds with a school that would stand as an example for the whole world to see that being nice, working hard, and getting smart matter far more than race or class or zip code.”  100% college acceptance each year, he believes, is now an entrenched part of the school’s culture.
