On Friday, February 5, 2016, members of the Veterans Memorial Plaque Committee accepted a check in the amount of $2,000 from John Stonecipher, CEO, Guidance Aviation. The funds will provide the remaining money needed to update the Veterans Memorial Plaque in downtown Prescott, AZ.
“We are so happy to receive Guidance Aviation's generous matching gift that has allowed us to meet our goal to recast this most important memorial plaque. However, we are still asking for donations for the dedication ceremony itself so that we can make it as meaningful as possible for the family and friends of the fallen veterans being added to the plaque. Donations can be made to: Veterans Memorial Plaque Fund P.O. Box 11594 Prescott, AZ 86304,” said Phil Goode of the Veterans Memorial Plaque Committee.
PrescotteNews.com first reported on the efforts of the Veterans Memorial Plaque Committee in the Article, “Prescott Citizens Move to Honor Fallen Yavapai County Heroes”. The effort was launched by Ms. Betty Bourgault, a relentless advocate for the silent, is known for her work with cemeteries and memorials in Prescott. She is a tireless volunteer, working with the Yavapai Cemetery Association, making sure those due recognition receive the respect and honor they deserve. “I was shocked and very disappointed to see that the war memorial had not been updated since Operation Desert Storm which ended in February of 1991.”
Fortunately, Bourgault received help in moving the Veteran Memorial Plaque initiative forward by Vietnam Veteran Mr. Phil Goode. "Betty’s interest and diligent efforts to uncover and document the historical records of Prescott, Yavapai County, and its residents helps our history come alive. Due to historians like her, we can truly enjoy the great and significant heritage that Prescott and Yavapai county is known for. She certainly helped me to recognize a historical deficiency that needed to be corrected on our Veterans Memorial monument," remarks Goode.

Goode, a Vietnam veteran knew he could help Bourgault. "I have a lot of experience in veteran related projects and I have worked on five political campaigns (from city council races to U.S. Congress – including the recently successful mayoral campaign of Harry Oberg’s) so that can be a big help in navigating projects like this that can sometimes become politically sensitive," says Goode.
If you've walked the west side of the courthouse plaza in downtown Prescott, you have most likely seen the Veterans Memorial statue and plaque. What you may not have noticed is that it needs to be updated as the last few years of war have unfortunately taken the lives of at least six Yavapai County residents.
The Veterans Memorial Plaque Committee received unanimous approval for their proposal to update the plaque on the All Veterans Memorial from the Board of Supervisors at their meeting on Monday, December 7, 2015.
