10 October 2017

Embry-Riddle and the Prescott community celebrate OctoberWest Week in style.

Embry-Riddle had an activity-packed week celebrating OctoberWest in Prescott. Starting out with a Coffee House Kick-Off on Monday, other events were also included throughout the week, such as

  • the OctoberWest Color Run
  • Build an Eagle Event
  • Career Industry Expo Company Presentations,
  • Aviation Speakers
  • Alumni Eagle Night
  • the Great Paratrooper Hunt
  • an Alumni Golf Tournament
  • an Alumni Women’s Breakfast
  • a Fall Undergraduate Research Symposium
  • Friday Fair with Flyover
  • Chancellor’s Alumni Hall of Fame Reception & Dinner
  • Fireworks!
  • Hypnotist

Not all of these events were only for Embry-Riddle faculty, students and alumni, however. On Friday, the University held the ribbon cutting for the brand-new STEM facility known as the Jim and Linda Lee Planetarium. Community members joined University President, P. Barry Butler, Ph.D., who came to Prescott to join the festivities.

This STEM facility is an awe-inspiring technological delight, not just for the ERAU campus, but for the Prescott community as well. The two-story, 52,000 square foot building contains not just a 360º high definition planetarium - which in itself is enough to be thrilled over - but 20 industry-grade labs as well. Each laboratory contains innovative technological equipment that will help support degrees offered in astronomy, forensic biology, space physics, wildlife science and much more.

Of interest: ERAU has a new bachelor’s degree in Simulation Science, Gaming and Animation. Gamers, take note!

"The Jim and Linda Lee Planetarium will delight students and residents alike with a variety of presentations," said Chancellor Dr. Frank Ayers in an Embry-Riddle Newsroom article. "It is much more than a planetarium, containing multimedia learning software that can display full-dome planetarium features that explore the planets and look into the complexity of the human body or modern spacecraft design. We will be learning about all of its capabilities this year and it will soon be open to the public.”

The Jim and Linda Lee Planetarium is the only planetarium in Arizona north of Phoenix.

To finish off the weekend in grand style, Embry-Riddle and the City of Prescott co-sponsored the Wings Out West Airshow, featuring Matt Chapman, Bill Stein, Skip Stewart and Cindy Irish.

These aeronautic acrobats wowed the crowd of about 4500 - a mix of about 1000 ERAU people and 3500 from the public. If you missed this year’s event, you’ll want to put it on next year's calendar right now.
