First Quarter 2017 Strong Start for BASIS Students

BASIS Prescott students continue to excel academics, music and sports. Jackson Nichols was nominated as a National Merit Finalist in February. This is a tremendous accomplishment that comes with great effort. With less than 1% of seniors nationwide belonging to this group, it is truly a rare and outstanding achievement.

From the classroom to the orchestra, Erika Gustafson, Caroline Dixon and Charles Longacre, BASIS Prescott students, were recently selected to perform in an elite regional orchestra comprised of students from over a dozen schools throughout Northern Arizona. Earlier in the year, hundreds of students travelled to Coconino High School in Flagstaff to audition to be a part of this orchestra. Students who made the cut gathered at Prescott High School under the direction of Dr. Darlene Wedington-Clark to perform works by Stravinsky, Wagner and Soo Hee Newbold. Students rehearsed for less than 3 days together before performing as part of this annual event for High School students in the Northwest Region of Arizona.

Topping off BASIS Prescott student achievements in academics and music comes a wrestling champion, Anthony Black, who was undefeated in the 113 pound weight class this season culminating with the State Title. This was the first year BASIS Prescott had a wrestling program. Great job Coach Hansen and congratulations to Anthony.

BASIS Prescott senior Erika Gustafson, 17, of Prescott, Ariz., was named a finalist in the Prudential Spirit Community Award. The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards, now in its 22nd year, is conducted by Prudential Financial in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP). Erika was recognized for her leadership and guidance to a nonprofit teen center, The Launch Pad, for several years, first as a member of its board of directors and, later, also as a member of its finance committee. In addition to participating in monthly meetings, Erika has used her connections in the community to support the organization’s work, created budgets, helped to create bylaws and procedures, and stayed up-to-date with laws impacting nonprofit organizations.
