Walker’s Two Homers Lead Badgers 14-3 : PHS Sports Roundup

Leigha Walker hit a pair of home runs, including a two run job in the bottom of the sixth, to end the game early with a 14-3 win over the Tempe Buffaloes. Walker, who finished with three hits and six RBIs said, ”I was just waiting for my pitches, and she threw them right where I like them. The first one I was not sure at first, because it was so high up, it just carried on out. The last one I knew for sure.”

Trailing 2-0 in the opening inning, the Badgers tied the game after Ruby Tessman and Kennedy Carr singled, and eventually scored on an error and a fielders’ choice. Ava Hlavacek picked up an RBI on a ground out, and Walker delivered with an RBI double for a 4-2 lead.

The Badgers added one in the fourth when Maddie Vick doubled, and scored on an unusual infield sacrifice fly by Elle Long. Ahead 5-2, Prescott broke it open in the fifth. Tessman singled, Carr walked, and Hlavacek;s two RBI double made the score 7-2. Walker hit a moon shot over the left field fence to increase the lead to 9-2. Back to back errors by the Tempe shortstop, added a tenth run. The final run of the inning came when Maddie Antoni’s  ground out scored Vick, who reached on an error.

Tempe added a run, but the Badgers finished things off in the bottom of the sixth. Carr walked, stole second, and scored on a double by Hlavacek. Walker followed with the blast to left center.

Hlavacek ended two hits, one a double and four RBIs. Ruby Tessman, who came into pitch with two outs in the top of the first, scored three runs, had three hits, and three stolen bases, said ”I am always ready and glad to be able to come in and pick one of my teammates up. We hit the ball good today, and made some good things happen.” Prescott stole a total of 10 bases.

Tessman  replaced RJ Parra and finished the final 5 1/3, allowing just one run while striking out five, to pick up the win.

Tempe (3-12) was led by Anastacia Gloria, who had a pair of hits, including a double. Ailana Feliz Reyes and Mecca Moore each had a single and an RBI.

The Badgers even their record at (8-8). Prescott will play Mingus in Cottonwood, on Monday at 3:45 pm.

Varsity Baseball

Tyson Potts pitched a complete game shutout as the Prescott Badgers blanked the Mohave Thunderbirds 10-0.

The Badgers scored in every inning but the fourth, picking up deuces in the first three innings, to lead 6-0.

Josh Miller, scored, had two hits and two RBIs. Ethan Ammerman had two RBIs with a double and scoring twice. Ryan Elliot scored once and had a pair of singles.

Tyson Potts also had a good day at the plate, collecting two hits, single and double, and an RBI. Potts was dominate on the mound, scattering four hits in six innings, with ten strikeouts. Potts said, “We did what we needed to do today. Played a complete game and made the plays that came our way.”

Leadoff hitter for Mohave, D. McDaniel had two of the Thunderbirds four hits.

The Badgers put together a four run rally in the top of the seventh to beat the Mohave Thunderbirds to complete the season sweep.

Prescott trailed 6-4 coming into the last inning. Peyton Little came in to relieve starting pitcher Ethan Ammerman, covering the final two innings, allowing no runs or hits, and striking out two to pick up the win. Ammerman went the first five allowing just one earned run, as the Badgers defensive mistakes nearly cost them the game.

Sam Strasser had a single, a double, and an RBI. Josh Miller also had a single, along with a double and two RBIs. Ammerman had two singles, and an RBI. Brendan Costes produced a double and two RBIs, and Peyton Little came through with a two RBI double.

Prescott (5-2) in the Grand Canyon Region, and (8-6) overall will return to action on Wednesday, in a non-region contest at Saguaro. Game time is 3:45 pm.

The Badgers swept Coconino 9-0 in Flagstaff yesterday. Prescott improves to (3-1) in Division II, Section II, and (7-1) overall, and will travel back to Flagstaff to face the Eagles on Tuesday at 3:30 pm.

Prescott won a tough battle with Cactus Shadows 5-3 to remain undefeated at (3-0) in Division II, Section II. The Badgers are (6-3) overall and will host Flagstaff on Tuesday at 3:30pm.
