Gary and Jean Prescott, left, will be performing Friday night, and The Desert Sons will be performing on Saturday night. For more information, check out the Cowboy Poets website.Working from dawn to dark. Wringing dry, cracked hands at the end of day. And listening to sore muscles howl at you for hours just to get up the next day and do it all again. It might not sound like much of a life to many folks but it's the chosen path for working cowboys, both male and female.
One of their great pleasures is getting together to swap tales, music and jokes with reverence; a treasured tradition for several centuries that has imprinted this lifestyle into history and culture worldwide. In fact, people cross the seas to come to the great American West to immerse themselves in the fantasies they have conjured from images of the almighty American cowboy. That's exactly what's expected to happen this weekend in the old Arizona Territorial Capital of Prescott as more than 40 working cowboy poets get together once again for the 21st annual Arizona Cowboy Poets Gathering at Yavapai College. Evening performances are planned Friday and Saturday at the college's performance hall, and free workshops offering the public a more intimate settting to meet the cowboys are slated from noon to 5 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at various locations on the college campus.
