Victoria wowed the crowd with how much she had learned in just two weeks. From a goldfish named Bono, to flip-flops stuck in mud, students from Northpoint Exoeditionary Learning Academy showed their heart and humor as they performed at The Raven on Sunday night. These students were part of the Find Your Own Rhythm intensive class. Instead of offering regular electives throughout the year, Northpoint blocks out 2 weeks at the end of each semester in which the students are able to focus entirely on an subject of their choice. Intensives can cover anything from sculpture, to movie making or even out-of-country trips. And by allowing the students to devote two entire weeks on that elective subject, they can learn in continuity without interruptions by pressure-packed courses such as, well, algebra or biology. The Find Your Own Rhythm intensive, taught by Brendan Haggerty, (who is the sophomore biology teacher during the rest of the semester) was designed to be an exploration of music and songwriting. The focus was primarily on songwriting as an art, and used real life examples of modern-day musicians. It included attending concerts at the Raven, and day trips to learn about things that can inspire songs. It also included instruction in learning to play a musical instrument, such as guitars or keyboards. Sunday night was the opportunity the kids had been preparing for. The Raven, which is usually closed on Sunday evenings, opened their doors and stage for the young musicians to show their new-found skills to their families and friends. Despite their nervousness, the students bravely got up to perform before the standing-room-only audience. Sometimes they started off a bit wobbly, but each one, by the time they were done, had gained strength and confidence - and it showed. The audience was very supportive, loudly applauding after each student sang and played. The songs were honest and poignant, funny and yet, sincere. Those listening were reminded at times of what it is like to be a teenager and that it's not always easy to find one's place in this big world. But, by the end of the night, there was no doubt that the students had learned much in the last two weeks, and their enthusiasm and willingness to stand up and share tiny glimpses of their personal journeys made everyone proud to be part of such a special evening.
