When you first drive up to the Royal Hawaiian Coffee and Wine Co., it looks like two different businesses, side by side. And it is, kind of. On the left side is the coffee shop and restaurant, but the door on the right leads into the wine company. The Royal Hawaian Coffee and Wine Co. is owned by Clyde and Lynette Woode, and it's obvious they had big dreams when they started this business. Lynette wanted to offer gourmet coffees and desserts, while preparing delicous meals for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Clyde wanted an opportunity to focus on what he knew and loved best - fine wines. So, they decided to do both, and opened two shops that are distinct, yet intertwined. And the Wine and Appetizer Socials are a great example of how nicely this idea works. About twice a month, Clyde hosts a Wine and Appetizer Social where he features four wines, and offers a short class about the ones he has selected. Lynette provides the appetizers for the socials. Together, you couldn't ask for a more delightful evening. This last Saturday, the Woodes invited Patrick, from Young's Market Co., to pour the the chosen wines for tasting:
Clyde explained, "We are tasting 4 great wines including John Duval's Entity. He was the winemaker in charge of Penfold's Grange ( one of the most expensive wines in the World) so he knows a lot about making great Syrah (Shiraz). Entity is a fraction of the price that Grange now fetches."
After a time of wine sampling and munching, attenders are invited into the classroom for a short, informal lesson about the wines they just tasted. And yes, I did say "classroom". Don't think desks and hard wooden chairs. This classroom has tables and deep leather armchairs for people to sit in. Clyde keeps his lessons informative and interesting. You see, Clyde wants to do much more than simply sell you a bottle (or case) of wine. Clyde really wants to share his vast knowledge of wines with his clientele, so that they will experience what they are tasting with a whole new appreciation. All in all, it was a fun evening with nice people, wonderful wines and delectable appetizers. Circle your calendar for the next one, you'll have a great time.

Ever needed to know what wine to serve with dinner? Have you wondered how it was made, and where it came from, and what grapes were used? Wouldn't you like to learn more about that glass of wine that can enhance or ruin your meals? Well, then, head over to the Saturday Night Wine and Food Socials, held at the Royal Hawaiian Coffee and Wine Co.. It's one of Prescott's best kept secrets.
Accompanying the wines were trays of wonderful appetizers prepared by Lynette, including smoked salmon and cream cheese on crackers, pizza with marinated shrimp, chicken wings, and a delectable sausage, brie and grape hors d'oeurvre, just to name a few. Even if you don't drink wine, the abundant trays of appetizers alone are worth the price of admission.
